AI Cyber Defense / Incident response, recovery and professional validation
AI Cyber Defense: Preserve evidence before rebuilding a compromised host
Balance immediate harm reduction with targeted evidence preservation. Record the collector, integrity hashes and any evidence unavailable because containment took priority.
Environment and inputs: Enterprise incident response, identity recovery, isolated restores, evidence handling and authorized tabletop or lab validation.
Scenario and goal
A rapid rebuild can remove the records needed to identify the entry path or affected data.
Why it matters
For this scenario, assume the event sequence may progress faster than normal approval discussions. Prepare decision owners, evidence requirements and reversible containment options before an incident. Separate confirmed access, potential scope, business impact and the attribution of tools. A claim that AI was involved should not delay protection of a verified boundary or inflate a conclusion beyond the retained evidence.
Evidence to collect
Collect available event logs, disk or memory evidence as appropriate, network context and collection timestamps under a documented handling procedure.
Validate with an authorized exercise
Practice on a disposable host and verify the evidence manifest, hashes and access controls; confirm the recovery team can rebuild without overwriting the preserved test evidence.
Synthetic technical example
Hash a synthetic byte string to illustrate an integrity manifest. A hash does not prove origin or chain of custody; real evidence handling must record collection, storage and access history.
from hashlib import sha256
synthetic_evidence = b'fictional incident event\n'
manifest = {'name': 'synthetic-event.txt',
'bytes': len(synthetic_evidence),
'sha256': sha256(synthetic_evidence).hexdigest()}
assert len(manifest['sha256']) == 64
print(manifest)
Rollout and checks
Record action states as proposed, approved, attempted and confirmed, keeping the backend receipt when available. Preserve decisive evidence while reducing immediate harm and document unavoidable gaps. Recovery requires trusted administration, corrected entry paths and tested service behavior. Retire temporary access and exceptions before closing the incident, and give every remaining improvement an owner and acceptance check.
Scope and limits
This guide proposes a defensive test; it is not a tested production design. Check platform support and local requirements. References explain the mechanisms but do not certify the design. Behavior alone does not prove AI involvement.
