AI Cyber Defense: Bind AI tool approval to exact action arguments

Present the exact target and effect for high-impact actions and bind approval to immutable arguments. Any material argument change must invalidate the prior approval.

Environment and inputs: Enterprise AI assistants, security copilots, retrieval systems and application-controlled tool executors; framework-independent design.

Scenario and goal

A human may approve a safe-looking summary while the actual tool request targets a different resource.

Why it matters

This path concerns attacks against AI-enabled systems used by the defender or business. It complements defenses against attackers who use AI as a tool. Treat model inputs, retrieved evidence and generated plans as untrusted proposals at execution boundaries. A model may assist analysis, but the application remains responsible for tenant isolation, authorization, resource budgets and the integrity of approvals and receipts.

Evidence to collect

Capture tool name, validated arguments, requester identity, approval digest and execution receipt.

Validate with an authorized exercise

Approve a harmless test action, then change its target in a fixture; verify execution is rejected until a new approval covers the revised arguments.

Synthetic technical example

Illustrative digest binding for a synthetic proposal. The actual approval record must be authenticated, protected from tampering, scoped to an approver and checked atomically before execution; a bare hash is not authorization.

import json
from hashlib import sha256

def digest(action):
    raw = json.dumps(action, sort_keys=True, separators=(',', ':')).encode()
    return sha256(raw).hexdigest()

approved = {'tool': 'test_only', 'target': 'demo-A'}
changed = {'tool': 'test_only', 'target': 'demo-B'}
assert digest(approved) != digest(changed)
print('Changed target requires a different approval binding')

Rollout and checks

Use synthetic evidence and mocked write tools for adversarial evaluation. Version the model, prompts, tool contracts and retrieval configuration together. Keep high-impact permissions outside the model and retain an operator takeover path. When an evaluation fails, correct the enforceable boundary and rerun the same fixture rather than relying only on a stronger wording of the prompt.

Scope and limits

This guide proposes a defensive test; it is not a tested production design. Check platform support and local requirements. References explain the mechanisms but do not certify the design. Behavior alone does not prove AI involvement.
