An Alert Should Tell Someone When to Act

Reduce noise by tying urgent notifications to meaningful service impact.

Compiled for Sorlavit Kim · Published · 1 min read

Too many low-value alerts make important failures easier to overlook. Google’s SRE guidance evaluates alerting by precision, recall, detection time, and reset time. The objective is to detect significant events promptly while avoiding notifications that do not call for an immediate response.

What matters

  • Connect urgent alerts to user impact or rapid consumption of a service’s error budget.
  • Route slow-moving issues to normal work queues when an immediate page is unnecessary.
  • Review incidents that were missed and alerts that repeatedly produced no useful action.

Practical example: A brief CPU spike creates no page unless it affects service behaviour, while sustained failed transactions trigger an urgent response.

One action today: Review the noisiest alert and decide what action genuinely justifies its urgency.
