Secrets Belong in a Managed Store, Not in Code

Protect API keys and credentials through controlled access, rotation, and revocation.

API keys copied into scripts, chat messages, or repositories are difficult to control. A managed secrets process centralises access, records usage, and supports replacement when a credential is exposed. OWASP recommends treating secrets as lifecycle-managed assets rather than permanent strings in configuration.

What matters

  • Keep secrets out of source code and restrict access to the workloads that need them.
  • Plan how each credential can be rotated or revoked without unnecessary disruption.
  • Audit secret access and prevent plaintext values from appearing in logs.

Practical example: A scheduled integration retrieves its credential at runtime rather than storing an API key in a shared script.

One action today: Find one hard-coded credential and plan its move to an appropriate secrets store.
